First training for volunteers
At the beginning of August, we organized the first training for volunteers in the scope of the “Help a Farmer” initiative. The first part of the training took place in DINA Pivka, with a theoretical introduction by the LIFE Varna Paša team members. They presented the reasons why damage events after large carnivores occur, how they can be prevented and the purpose of the “Help a farmer” initiative. The theoretical part was concluded with a presentation of technical aspects of installing high electric nettings in the field.
The practical part of the training took place on the Farm Slavec in Knežak. The owner of the farm, Gregor Slavec, has been using high electric nettings and livestock guarding dogs to protect his livestock for several years. After a tour of the farm, a practical exercise followed: the volunteers learned about the equipment needed to set up the high electric nettings and tried to set them up themselves. After the successful completion of the work, the participants also tasted homemade delicacies from the farm, and especially enjoyed their famous goat’s milk ice-cream.
