The first Open Day at the Sedmak Farm successfully brought together farmers and nature enthusiasts

5. June 2026

On 26 May 2026 we successfully organized the first Open Doors Day at the Sedmak Family Farm in Juršče near Pivka. The event was dedicated to presenting best practice examples and practices for protecting small livestock from large carnivores, especially with the help of livestock guarding dogs.

The programme attracted around 40 visitors. Participants learned about the operation of the farm, where sheep and goats graze on dry Karst grasslands, and gained insight into the challenges of coexistence between livestock farming and large carnivores.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the use of livestock guarding dogs, delivered through the practical experience of a breeder, who introduced visitors to the breeding, training, and everyday work of these dogs in protecting flocks. In addition, the LIFE Varna paša project activities, the livestock guardian dog co-financing scheme, and practical examples of effective livestock protection measures were presented.

The event demonstrated the strong public interest in livestock guarding dogs and the challenges of farming in areas inhabited by large carnivores. It also highlighted the importance of exchanging experiences and showcasing good practices to strengthen trust and cooperation among farmers, experts, and the wider public.
