This week the first livestock guarding dog from the LIFE Varna paša project, Živa the Karst Shepherd bred by Renata Hubej, went to a small cattle breeder in Idrija. She is the first of about 20 puppies which will be co-financed by project. Ms Renata is an experienced breeder of working line Karst Shepherds and will also help the new owners to raise the puppy into an independent livestock guarding dog. The Kraševec is a native Slovenian breed, these dogs have been performing guarding and shepherding duties on the territory of Slovenia since the very beginning of sheep breeding.

Today, interest in livestock guarding dogs is growing, as they are one of the most tried and tested and effective ways of protecting small livestock. A call for proposals is now open on the LIFE Varna paša website for livestock farmers who want to reinforce the protection of their herds with a livestock guarding dog. This will also help to reduce conflicts and ensure the long-term sustainability of farming activities in areas where bears and wolves are present.
