Counterweight bars are used to protect beehives from damages caused by bears and are a physical barrier. Bars are usually made from metal or wood, and are attached to the beehive’s framework and interconnect within the beehive. The bars prevent bears from getting inside the beehive box and hence from obtaining a food reward. Nevertheless, some damage can still occur using the bars. This measure should be combined with other measures, which prevent the brown bear to access the beehive. Since the brown bear does not access the contents of the beehive, it is not rewarded, and no longer returns, with counterweight rods, the effectiveness of the protection can only be further strengthened, but not prevented.
